Project Manager "Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice" (m/f/d)

at the head office of forumZFD in Cologne or remote (later Odesa)

Become part of our Ukrainian programme team! As Project Manager you are responsible for the design and implementation of the programme component Dealing with the past and Transitional Justice in the forumZFD Ukraine team. 

The place of work is initially the head office of forumZFD in Cologne, Germany. Remote work is possible. The work place will be Odesa, Ukraine (or Western Ukraine/ a neighbouring country as an interim location) as soon as the security situation permits.

What you can expect

As a Project Manager for Dealing with the Past (DwP) and Transitional Justice (TJ), you will be part of the Ukraine programme of forumZFD and design and implement projects in close cooperation with partner organisations and local actors in Odesa region, and potentially other regions of Ukraine. 

You develop and implement processes, concepts, and approaches of DwP and TJ in an inclusive and participatory manner together with civil society and state actors. You will contribute as well to strengthening the capacities of our partners to inform, influence and participate in the development and implementation of DwP and TJ measures in Ukraine. 

You will be working closely with the forumZFD team Ukraine, comprised by international and national team members, as well as in close cooperation with a variety of partner organisations and stakeholders. 

Your tasks in detail

  • You design and implement concepts and project activities in the area of DwP and TJ together with the partners.
  • You plan and conduct trainings and coaching for partners.
  • You plan, design and organize, in close cooperation with partners, workshops, training courses and other activities regarding the implementation of DwP and TJ activities.
  • You support the development of publications related to these topics and raise awareness among the public for the necessity of developing an inclusive culture of remembrance.  
  • You support networking of national NGOs and other stakeholders in the field of DwP and TJ. 
  • You identify new target groups that are involved in dialogue about history and remembrance. 
  • You support project documentation and presentation, as well as internal knowledge-management processes.

Your profile

  • A degree in social sciences, peace and conflict studies, or other relevant discipline.
  • A minimum 5 years of experience in the fields of Dealing with the Past and/or Transitional Justice, preferably with a focus on remembrance.  
  • Professional experience with the Civil Peace Service and/or development sector.  
  • Well-founded competencies in methods of nonviolent/civil conflict transformation and dialogue facilitation 
  • Project management experience, coupled with knowledge of PME methods, as well as experience in independent planning, initiation and implementation of projects in cooperation with local partners.
  • Resilience, self-confidence, conflict management abilities, and a structured, reliable and conscientious way of working.
  • Physical and psychological stability and strong intercultural sensitivity to work in a diverse team and challenging local context.
  • Very good computer skills (Office programs).
  • Fluent English both spoken and written is a must. Good knowledge of Russian and/or Ukrainian would be very welcome. 
  • Driving license and experience.
  • Willingness to relocate to Ukraine (an potential interim location, see above) as soon as the security situation permits based on a German Development Workers Contract (EhfG) or a national working contract. 

What we offer 

  • The working contract will initially be until the end of 2024. As soon as the security situation permits, the working place will be either Ukraine or a neighbouring country. The decision on the place of work will be taken after a thorough analysis of the situation in Ukraine and what security and safety implications it has for forumZFD staff
  • The remuneration is based on our work agreement on wage structuring. The advertised position is assigned to salary group 4c (Manager). In all salary groups, the remuneration increases with the length of service within the company. For more information, see
  • Weekly working hours: 32-40 hours (80 -100%)
  • Flexible working hours and possibilities to work remotely 
  • Six weeks of annual leave 
  • Opportunities for further training, e.g. at the Academy for Conflict Transformation of forumZFD
