BICC Expert Appointed to UN Panel of Experts on Yemen

Bonn International Center for Conversion - Press release - 24 April 2018 - On 27 March 2018, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed the five individuals to sit on the Panel of Experts on Yemen, mandated until 28 March 2019. Amongst them is Wolf-Christian Paes, who until his appointment was Head of Advisory Services at BICC. He is the expert on arms.The Panel of Experts on Yemen was created as a result of UN Security Council Resolution 2402 (2018). In this resolution, the Security Council reaffirms "its strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen", expresses "concern at the ongoing political, security, economic and humanitarian challenges in Yemen, including the ongoing violence, and threats arising from the illicit transfer, destabilizing accumulation and misuse of weapons," and determines "that the situation in Yemen continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security".

Wolf-Christian Paes joined BICC in 1999. As an expert on small arms and light weapons (SALW) control, he recently has been working in projects on the counter-proliferation of SALW, the physical security and stockpile management (PSSM) of state weapons stocks, the marking and registration of arms and ammunition and the improved coordination of arms control initiatives. These activities, mostly funded by the German Foreign Office, focus on the Sahel, Maghreb, the Horn of Africa and West Africa.
