Papers: The organizing committee for the research conference 'Post-crisis state transformation: rethinking the foundations of the state' is pleased to invite for abstracts of conference papers. Core activities of the conference will be based on lectures by invited speakers, followed by extensive discussion periods in plenary sessions. In addition, short talks, poster sessions and round-table discussions are organised to share perspectives and field experiences. The call for papers therefore has a double objective. Firstly, it allows the chairs to make a selection of topics for short talks, poster sessions and round-table discussions. Secondly, all papers that will be submitted and accepted will be available online on the website of the organizers. All abstracts will be available to participants during the conference. A selection of papers will lead to a publication (2010).
Case-study approach: Short talks (15 min) will be part of the plenary sessions. For this type of presentations, organisers are specifically interested in case studies. The eight topics and questions the papers are proposed to address can be found in the sessions of the conference programme at http://www.esf.org/conferences/09271. Poster sessions and round-table discussions will take place in addition to the plenary sessions and are not limited to case-studies.
Conference sessions will focus on:
- Configuration of actors and post-crisis State transformation
- Trajectories of post-crisis State formation
- Connecting Nation and State in diversified societies
- Elections, democratisation and its effects on State consolidation
- Central power in search of renewed legitimacy
- Criteria for working States
- Empirical approaches to State performance
- Is State formation still an agenda ? What alternatives to the Nation-State ?
- Forward Look Session: Where are knowledge gaps for effective action?
Instructions for paper submissions: All submissions must reflect original work. Paper abstracts can be submitted through the application form and should not exceed 400 words. Final papers must not exceed 15 pages, excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices. Please submit your paper abstract through the application form on the conference website
