The European Peace and Security Studies (EPSS) programme provides in-depth and unique insights into the changing nature and fundamental challenges of contemporary security issues from a distinct Brussels Perspective.
Practitioners and Senior Academics provide cutting-edge analyses of the European Union\'s and NATO\'s approaches to international security from an International Relations (IR), European Studies (ES) as well as Critical Perspectives.
The Three-months intensive Diploma Programme consists of five interrelated courses (worth 6 ECTS each):
1. European Peace and Security Studies – A Brussels Perspective
2.The European Union\'s Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) in Theory and Practice
3.Military Approaches to Promoting International Security
4.The European Union as an International Actor: Civilian Approaches to Promoting Security and Development
5. Understanding Contemporary Conflicts: Europe and Beyond
Apart from providing in-depth knowledge on the EU\'s, NATO\'s and the United Nations\' approaches to peacekeeping and crisis management, the programme also sheds light on the complex roots and causes of contemporary conflicts in Europe’s periphery and beyond.
Hence, at the end of the semester, students will have acquired an extensive knowledge of the institutional, theoretical and practical dimensions of contemporary issues and of the core actors in the field of European Peace and Security.
In addition to the five core courses offered, the EPSS programme includes a high-profile guest lecture series and symposium provided by academic experts and leading practitioners from the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and related security organizations. Students are actively encouraged to establish and maintain such contacts with key practitioners from Brussels-based institutions and the wider international academic community.
Outstanding applicants, coming from European and overseas academic institutions, military schools or governmental departments, pursuing a Bachelor degree can contact the Admission Office (vesalius@vub.ac.be) for a registration pack and further information.
