Pathways to Peace: Fostering Coordination in Sudan’s Mediation Processes
Two years into Sudan’s civil war, international and regional peace efforts have largely stalled, leaving hundreds of thousands dead, over 12 million displaced, and millions affected by famine and disease, while competing mediation initiatives have struggled due to political fragmentation and lack of commitment from the warring parties. Early 2025 has seen the emergence of two promising initiatives—a US-led “Quad for Sudan” and a multilateral “Quartet of Special Envoys”—whose coordination and support, along with sustained civilian dialogue and engagement from regional and international actors, could help break the current mediation stalemate.
