CfP: 'Human Rights in Conflict: The Role of Civil Society'

The organisers have the pleasure of inviting you to an international conference organized within the framework of the European FP6 SHUR project (www.luiss.it/shur) by the Center for Ethics and global politics of Luiss University.
Shur\'s final conference will focus on Human rights in conflict - the role of civil society and will take place on 4-6 June 2009 at Luiss University, Rome-Italy.
The prime objective of the conference is to analyse the following topics in an open debate with scholars and activists adopting different approaches and perspectives:

Shur\'s final conference will focus on Human rights in conflict - the role of civil society and will take place on 4-6 June 2009 at Luiss University, Rome-Italy.
The prime objective of the conference is to analyse the following topics in an open debate with scholars and activists adopting different approaches and perspectives:
- The link between human rights and conflicts.
- The role of civil society in the prevention/generation, amelioration/worsening and resolution/continuation of conflicts through its focus on human rights.
- Strategies to make civil society actions more effective in human rights protection in contexts of fragmented multi-ethnic political communities.
- Strategies to improve the complementarity between the actions and strategies pursued by governmental and non-governmental actors in conflict situations.
- Strategies to improve the impact of civil society actors in reducing human rights violations through greater synergies with the official European level.
The convenors expect to attract a relevant number of participants and to create a space for discussion that will improve the understanding of these dynamics.
Scholars and researchers in political and social theory, political science, international relations, socio-legal studies, area studies, media studies and human rights studies are invited to propose papers falling in one of following panels:
1. Conflict transformation and civil society engagement
2. Human rights in ethno-religious conflicts
3. Identity in conflict: concepts of nation, ethnicity and practices in conflict
4. Gender issues in conflict: what role for civil society?
5. The EU-civil society relations in conflict zones
All those who wish to present a paper at the conference are requested to send an abstract of 500 words on the topic of their paper and a short bio by February 28th 2009 to shur@luiss.it.
Acceptance of papers will be confirmed to the authors by March 15th.
Presentations should last no more than 20 min.; they will be followed by discussion and questions. The conference will be held in English.
A publication is foreseen in the form of an edited book. Selected papers designed for publication
should not exceed 7000 words. There is no conference fee.
The organization cannot provide any travel or accommodation funds for participants.
