together with our partner organisations from the Sri Lanka programme 

we are looking for an

International Peace Worker (m/f/d) based in Siem Reap/ Cambodia

Fields of Work:

As an international peace worker, you are responsible for accompanying KURVE Wustrow's partner organisations from the Sri Lanka program in focusing, designing and implementing holistic approaches to Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice. Additionally, you will support processes and network building with organisations from the Myanmar programme on Transitional Justice. You will be based in Cambodia (the hub of KURVE Wustrow‘s regional component), with frequent travels to Sri Lanka as well as to Thailand and, potentially, Myanmar and maybe other countries in the region. 

  • Identifying needs of partners working in the field of Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice in their respective contexts;
  • Strengthening capacities of partner organizations as well as war/conflict-affected communities and individuals (such as Families of the Disappeared, ethnic communities) in designing and implementing initiatives on holistic approaches to Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice;
  • Supporting the development of strategies and approaches to tailored processes and project activities of Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice in an inclusive and participatory manner together with partner organisations and their networks;
  • Supporting dialogue spaces for truth-telling, memorialization and the reflection of historical narratives for conflict transformation and reconciliation processes and to strengthen interethnic and interreligious relations, especially among youth;
  • Providing technical support for the documentation of human rights violations and the compilation of reports for judicial accountability, advocacy and lobbying;
  • Designing and facilitating workshops and trainings with partners; as well as designing educational materials;
  • Collaborating with the International Peace Worker supporting partners in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support;
  • Sensitisation and consultancy of Civil Peace Service (CPS) country teams in project work related to Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice processes;
  • Promoting regional, cross-country exchange and reflection spaces between CPS partner organisations as well as creating synergies in the field of Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice;
  • Exchange and networking with other national and international organisations in the field of Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice;
  • Ensuring a proper and adequate application of funds and reporting as well as regular communication with the CPS coordinators and KURVE Wustrow in Germany;
  • Contribution to ongoing conflict and security analyses related to the CPS work and close cooperation with other CPS-workers in the region;
  • Contribution to public relations and networking activities in Germany (if necessary).

Requirements:

  • A degree in peace and conflict studies, social science, social or peace work or comparable background with several years of work experience in the field of Dealing with the Past and Transitional Justice;
  • Sound knowledge of and experience in the field of Dealing with the Past/Transitional Justice in (post-) conflict contexts, as well as conflict transformation, peacebuilding and nonviolence;
  • Well-founded competencies in methods of nonviolent/civil conflict transformation and dialogue facilitation;
  • Experiences and sensitivity in working with war and conflict-affected individuals and communities; 
  • Knowledge about and experiences of secure collection and archiving of sensitive data;
  • Experience as a trainer and consultant for civil society organisations; 
  • Competence in gender-conscious and non-discriminatory working methods;
  • High willingness to learn and the ability to react flexibly to structures and concerns of different partner organisations;
  • Experience in working with intercultural teams, preferably in South Asia and/or Southeast Asia;
  • Regional knowledge and work experience in South Asia and/or Southeast Asia are an advantage;
  • Commitment, high frustration tolerance and the ability to deal with conflicts;
  • Very good knowledge of English; knowledge of Tamil, Sinhala and/or Burmese is an advantage; willingness to learn at least one of these national languages;
  • Willingness to work constructively in a small regional team of CPS professionals; 
  • Willingness to work partly online with partners and CPS team members in different locations as well as to travel within the region.

The Centre for Training and Networking in Nonviolent Action – KURVE Wustrow was founded in 1980 with the aim of turning concerns about violent conflict, environmental degradation and social injustice into conscious nonviolent action. 

KURVE Wustrow conducts trainings, workshops and events in the field of civil, nonviolent conflict transformation at home and abroad. We send International Peace Workers as part of the “Civil Peace Service” (CPS) to selected conflict regions. For this purpose, KURVE Wustrow is closely cooperating with partner organisations in the Western Balkans, in the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan and in South and Southeast Asia. Further focal points of our work include our commitment to climate and resource protection and against nuclear energy.

Contractual conditions:

We offer a contract in accordance with the German law for development aid workers (only for EU-citizens) or a contract in alignment with the German law for development aid workers for citizens from other countries until 31 December 2026, on the condition of funding by the BMZ beyond 31.12.2025, including a three months preparation period in Germany expected to commence on 01 February 2024.


The conditions of the German law for development aid workers precludes the application and deployment of citizens of the deployment countries.
